The Gold Diggers by David Hanson Word count: 530 James coughed for what seemed to be the twentieth time in just five minutes as dust flew everywhere.  Ronan paid the chokes no mind at all. “Ronan, why the hell are we digging through all this junk again?” “To find buried treasure,” replied Ronan. “Buried treasure in an old warehouse?  Right…” “Do you not believe me?” “No.  Not really.” “Well, you can go home then.” “Hold it,” interrupted Steven.  “Ronan’s right.  We could easily find something worth a pretty penny in this place.” “Like what?” said Ronan huffily. “Well, you see, long ago in a warehouse just like this one, I found a gold cigarette lighter that had an engraved initial.  The initials were ‘T. R. M.’ and was in shoebox marked out to have belonged to a ‘Robert Holmes’.” “ ‘T. R. M.’?” questioned Ronan. “ ‘The Royal Mariners’,” said James.  “I think that that’s what it stands for.” Steven grinned.  “You’d be right, the famous old club that still goes on to this day.”  He went back to rummaging through a pile of junk behind him.  “Robert Holmes,” he went on, “was my Uncle Terry’s father, the Uncle Terry that married my Aunt Lucy.  The value that lighter had when my Uncle Terry saw it was priceless, thing’s worth some two grand because of the club’s initial alone.  Therefore, it’s imperative we find something of value in this heap, if not for me, for Uncle Terry.  Man put himself in crutches looking for that lighter, that he did.” But try as they might, the boys searched hour after hour, but found nothing.  Cheap bronze cups and unremarkable little lamps and boxes were all to be seen among the piles.  It was nearly sundown, James and Ronan grunted as they tried to push an old desk away, when both began to cough furiously when the movement unleashed a swarm of dust particles.  James, who couldn’t stand the specks, stumbled and fell onto a laid down bookshelf and the pain shot through his back. “James!” cried Ronan.  “You all right?” “No,” came a wheezing reply, James looked pale and unwell, the hours of labor were taking their toll. “Steven,” said Ronan, “come on, we’ve done all that we can to find something, but all we’ve gotten so far are sore muscles and dust in our lungs.” Steven grimaced and didn’t reply.  He heard James’ coughs; they were heavy and sickening to the stomach.  Steven tried to block them out, but even then, the putrid smell of his surroundings was beginning to get to him.  At one point he heard rummaging as Ronan led James out, he attempted to push aside an oil drum to look underneath when he suddenly fell and scraped his knee.  Steven hissed, stood up, and choked on the heavy, musty air. He looked around, the place beginning to look vile.  “Perhaps I should’ve gone with them already,” he muttered, looking out to the night sky – he felt a soft breeze against his sweaty skin and his lungs relished taking in the fresh air.  Slowly and carefully, Steven clambered toward his car.  Keen to not try warehouse digging for a long while.  His bloody knee certainly agreed!

12/16/23, Night Shift – Episode 6 By David Hanson Word count: 2,281 Narrator Years went by since that fateful night Adam Montgomery had killed the previous COO and became the new one.  Fetching nourishment for his company’s bosses and enjoying the rewards that came from such work. Boss #1 Well done, Mr. Montgomery.  Right now, however, we need far more nourishment than before.  The economy is absolutely kaput right now and we need more brainpower to think of a way out of this crisis. Adam More…so I suppose that means extra workers on the night shift? Boss #2 Yes.  Is that a problem? Adam Of course it won’t be.  You’ll see, sir.  (later, sfx of elevator doors opening and footsteps) (thinking to himself) One, two…blast, they requested four workers?  Whatever, they’ll all be on this floor at any rate.  It’ll be a tight squeeze in the elevator or I’ll just have to kill someone out of sight so they don’t notice. sfx: Typing of a keyboard and shifts of paper Marcus I suppose Angela is handling the mathematics for the report on floor 39?  Right, Lily? Lily Correct, Marcus.  She says that management doesn’t allow those documents to leave that level because they tend to get lost in transport.  I think that’s just an excuse for poorly trained runners. Adam (thinking) There’s one on another floor?  That will make things complicated.  Five, five…damn it.  Well, whatever, the one downstairs doesn’t need to know.  It’ll just be the same as my predecessors on the night shift. Paul Drat… how long do you reckon all this will take? Audrey Four hours, Paul!  If we’re lucky. Evan (upset in a whiny way) Four hours?  Oh, I’ll be dead by that time! Audrey Oh, quit your whining, Evan.  It’s just work. Evan (defeated) Thanks, Audrey.  Ever the optimist… Narrator Adam observed all of this with little to no interest.  He just knew he had to keep an eye on his and the bosses’ food before preparations were due.  However, a complication soon arose. Lily I’ll just go and check in on Angela.  I’m sure she’s probably so engrossed in her work that she’s forgotten to have a snack. Adam (frustrated) Really?  I better go after her and make sure nothing will be amiss.  Last thing I want is a loose thread walking around before I go home to that new girl the boss is sending me. Narrator Adam went after her in pursuit — after so many years working as the COO he knew from prior experience that he was better off not letting his presence be known to the night shift workers before he prepared them for the bosses.  When he got to the 39th floor, he found that this ‘Angela’ didn’t make a habit of using as few lights as possible. sfx: elevator ding and doors opening Adam Damn it.  Where could she be? (sfx:  a door opens and footsteps can be heard) (in his thoughts) There she is, just have to make sure the other isn’t going to go looking for her or anything.  [sfx: gentle footsteps] Wonder if she has even met with her yet.  No one’s in that room, maybe here- Hey, where’d she go?  I could’ve sworn she went down this hall. Narrator Confused, Adam went along the hall silently, trying to see if she had ducked into a room but found she was nowhere to be found.  Having instead hit a dead end, he went back along a path that led back to the elevator only to see her coming back the exact same way he came in. She entered the elevator, documents in hand. Adam (calmly) Hold the door!  (sfx: jogging inside) Thanks. Angela You’re welcome.  Um, I wasn’t expecting anyone else on this floor.  You’re on the night shift as well? Adam Sort of.  I’m the security ‘round here.  I was…just doing the routine patrol.  Wasn’t expecting someone on this floor. Angela I’m not surprised, they asked to come in at the last minute just a mere hour before the shift started. Adam Yeah, the bosses have that sort of tendency. It’s…efficient to see the worth of something just before you need it.  Like food, you won’t know what it’s worth until it’s almost dinner time Angela I can agree with that.  (sfx: elevator door opens) Right, um, are you heading this way? Adam No, I have somewhere else to be. Angela Okay – see you later if I do, then.  (sfx: door shut) Did you guys know that the building’s security was around these floors? Paul News to me that we had any guards around here. Audrey If we did, I sure wasn’t aware of them. Evan Normally the ones outside, stay outside, right…?  Never saw them inside during the day shift. Angela Mm…perhaps being more crowded during the day means they’re not needed til nightfall.  Anyway, here’re some of those numbers you guys will need for the project, I just finished copying them from downstairs.  Can’t understand myself why the spreadsheets can’t come up here themselves… Marcus Thanks.  Er, a guard, though?  Strange.  I wonder what he’s doing all the way up here. Evan I-I prefer having him here.  Makes me feel safe in case any intruders come in or something… Marcus Wimp.  I want to go see him, just so I know who it is that we’re dealing with.  (sfx: walking in hallway) If I was a security guard, where would I be if not out in the open.  Here?  Here?  In here?  Or perhap- oh!  Hello there, you must be the security.  I wasn’t expecting someone like you to be on this floor. Adam Comes with being on the night shift. Marcus Uh…hey, what’s that in the bottle? Adam Want to try it? Marcus Uh, I just to- Adam I insist.  You know what?  Talking with you is inefficient. (sfx: forceful grab) Marcus Hey!  Wait, wha- (sfx: forced to drink; electric saw starts up) Adam Heh… Ha…Ahahahaha…! sfx: keyboards typing…

09/25/20 For Environmental Toxicology at Sonoma State University Energy Sources By David Hanson Word count: 3,330 The topic of finding renewable, practical, and safe power sources is nothing new to the world, for years it has been a problem.  Whether it is asking if it is safe for only humans or for the environment, asking if it is viable enough, the question is not simple to answer.  New sources are found, or old ones are reevaluated for practical application and receive modifications that enhance their chances of being better than before.  We need the energy to power the lights at night, the medical equipment in hospitals and at homes, it is a vital source.  The look for energy sources is never stagnant and is always topical in a day and age where climate change and human safety are of top priority in making these decisions. This topic is of high importance as the potential side effects of each power source may affect the very environment they inhabit or could alter the inhabitants’ lives if proven to be unreliable, extremely expensive, or extremely hazardous.  The intention here to is provide the public with the facts of some of these resources, how applicable, practical, feasible, safe, and risky they are to humans and the environment with the latest data.  The information is given to allow you to reach your own conclusions based on the data and research over the current century and in recent years.             Liquefied Natural Gas, or LNG, liquefies at about minus 259 degrees Fahrenheit (or minus 161 Celsius).  Collected in country and mined elsewhere overseas in Peru, Russia, and the Middle East, LNG when warmed is a natural gas that can fuel transport vehicles, generate electricity, heat, and power industry (Cox and Freehling, 2008).  The way it is used to make electricity is burning it to power a turbine through either heating water to create steam or by combustion to turn a turbine.  Natural gases when burned produce half the carbon dioxide that coal produces, and about less than a third of what oil does, making it cleaner than most other fossil fuels.  Natural gas in 2014 was found to be the cheapest way to produce electricity at 6 cents per kW hour (Newland, 2014).  Although listed by California as a clean source, in studies in 2008, LNG when mined and burned incorrectly produces a high content of propane and ethane, resulting in more carbon dioxide releases than regular methane, a chemical already cited as a greenhouse gas that is said to be 20-23% more toxic than carbon dioxide.  The collection, liquefication, transportation, and storage all involve the usage of fossil fuels in very high amounts; the calculated damages from just the fossil fuels used for those processes has been calculated to be nearly 50% more damaging to the environment than when the LNG is burned.  LNG is highly flammable when it is vaporized; a LNG tanker fire can send second degree burns up to a mile away (Cox and Freehling, 2008).   The Donald Trump administration recently approved the movement of LNG by rail, however, in early 2020 California has been quick to resist and criticize the move, citing how dangerous and highly flammable the gas is, especially in areas with high speed trains and large traffic (Egelko, 2020).  2019 saw Los Angeles’ Mayor Eric Garcetti choose to not rebuild, but to instead dismantle the city’s three natural gas powerplants as the city wishes to become carbon independent (Chediak, 2019) Statistically LNG has been exported out of the United States more than it has been in demand at home.  2016-19 saw the export capacity significantly increase from the original highest 771 billion cubic feet, Bcf, in 2007 to the highest it has been at 1,819 Bcf in 2019, resulting in LNG being 39% of all the United States natural gas exports to other countries, implying that the resource is not in high demand in the country (“U.S. Energy Information Administration”, 2019).  Hydroelectricity is the system of using the flow of water from dams or natural rivers and canals to spin turbines to generate electricity.  Using the flow of water is simply re-engineering the waterwheel concept, resulting in an efficient method of generating electricity and is done without impacting the amount of water in reservoirs.  The power plants produce very little greenhouse gases during electricity production (Jensen, 2018).  In 2017 hydroelectricity was the leading renewable energy source for the United States.  The Niagra Falls powerplant was found to produce enough electricity to power 24 million 100 watt lightbulbs (“Water Energy”, 2017).  By 2019 hydroelectricity made up 19.21% or 38,494 gigawatt-hours of all used energy produced in-state in California (Nyberg, 2019).  The costs of labor and maintenance are low after the initial large costs to build the dam.  Water additionally as a supply will not fluctuate the same way coal or gas will, resulting in no massive rises or falls in the price of electricity as demand increases or decreases over the years.  The reservoirs created as a result are great for recreational use much like Niagra Falls or local ones such as the San Pablo reservoir which can charge visiting fees that go into maintaining the reservoir courtesy of the likes of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (“Pros and Cons of Hydroelectric Energy”, 2020). The creation of water reservoirs, however, are not in high demand, dams alone take a lot of time and money to construct and what viable and sensible spots to cap off water from have already been taken, meaning that the prospect of more hydroelectric plants is not open for expansion as other power sources can possibly be.  Although it has been previously said that water can be seen as a renewable source, inconsistent precipitation levels and droughts year by year can affect supply in the long run.  The same currently created reservoirs, although good for recreational use and habitat creation, can also be the cause of potential flooding of residential zones, farm…
